Capulin Volcano, created approximately 60,000 years ago, is a symmetrical cinder cone rising more than 1000 feet above the surrounding landscape in the northeast corner of New Mexico. Visits to the top of the volcano provide unobstructed, panoramic views of the volcanic field and distant snow-capped mountains. Capulin Volcano is approximately 4 miles in circumference at the base and 1 mile in circumference at the irregular-shaped rim. Large mammals such as deer and bear may be seen roaming the volcano.
